Marriage, it’s often by noted, is all about compromise. For instance, I find watching, rather than participating in sports, to be an abomination. But I do enjoy drinking a locally made beer outside on a summer’s evening. My wife adores baseball, but couldn’t care less about a craft brew.
The compromise? An Erie Seawolves [...]

It’s a short and pleasant bike ride past the City Cemetery to what used to be a flourishing and busy Little Italy here in Erie. Though it is not the Little Italy of the early 20th Century, it is beginning to show signs of a renaissance.
Part of that renaissance was the reason for our bike [...]

When I was very small, an aunt took me to see National Velvet at the Warner Theatre. This memory is full of magic for me. Situated in the center of Downtown Erie, this theatre is grand to anyone’s eyes but especially to those of a small girl from the suburbs. The velvet seats, the balcony, [...]

We had some unusually warm, late-May weather here in Erie, and so one day after work, we decided a milkshake on the lake sounded like a perfect, cooling treat. Memorial Day had been a bit early, so we knew Sara’s would be open for the season.
It was open and it was packed!
Sara’s Diner sits at [...]

Erie may be a small city, but thanks to some amazing venues and patrons, we get big city entertainment without the traffic and the ticket prices. Within 2 miles of our home, one of the greatest and newest venues sits on the campus of Mercyhurst College: the D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.
Mercyhurst is known around here [...]

I live in what used to be Germantown very near to what used to be Little Italy. Over the past decade, you are more likely to hear Russian or Ukrainian in old Germantown and Spanish in Little Italy. You still hear Italian here and there, but now in the grocery store, I frequently hear Indian [...]

I don’t always have the time or the gumption to go to Presque Isle for a walk and some birding, but I am lucky enough to live near the 2nd best spot in the city for these two activities and certainly the best in the southern part of the city: the Erie Cemetery.
The Erie Cemetery [...]

My favorite time to eat at Colao’s Ristorante is the middle of winter, preferably during a blizzard or right after a fresh snowfall. It is deeply dark by seven thirty, my favorite time to make a reservation. If we are lucky, there is a moon hanging in the sky and Orion is visible.
We live a [...]

I am sitting on a plaid blanket under a blue sky in our greening yard as I write this. Overhead, there is a large cluster of migrating Black Vultures. Our yard is filled with chatter and song. I have to keep pausing to look through my monocular and make sure I am not seeing someone [...]

One of my favorite local places to get away in Erie is Asbury Park, located on south west 38th street. You can find a couple places to park your car and I recommend parking in the lot with the fields and pavilion to take a picnic, play some tennis or host a party! Across the [...]
