I was born in Saltsburg, PA, about an hour east of the city of Pittsburgh. When I asked my parents what nationality I was, they always said “Heinz 56,” and so I have always defined myself in relation to the city. I can tell if it’s Heinz ketchup on your plate, and I can tell you exactly how many bridges are in the Pittsburgh area (446, which is more than Venice). When I was 18, I left for Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. Then I soaked up the sun in Florida for six years. I completed an MFA in Poetry at the University of Florida and a PhD in Poetry from Florida State University. About nine months ago, I finally moved back. I now live in a great house in Mt. Oliver and spend my time exploring and learning about Pittsburgh and also teaching at the Community College of Allegheny County. My PhD dissertation is actually a collection of poetry about the city of Pittsburgh entitled Ghost City, which I hope will be a book on the market soon. Besides writing, I also spend a lot of my time in PA running, biking, kayaking, horseback riding and just hanging out with my dog, Kaya, and cat, Sterling.
