DogStar Bookstore – Lancaster, PA
I’m always a pushover for a great used book store, and Downtown Lancaster certainly has one in DogStar Books on West Chestnut Street. They offer a wide selection of titles, the overall condition of which is very good and quite affordable (most books range from $5 to $25 in price). At the same time, they also stock a variety of scholarly, literary, and art-related offerings, as well as quite a number of signed and rare books.
I easily “lost” an hour at DogStar on a recent Saturday, thumbing through the many historical and biographical selections, and made possible only by my two sons’ discovery of the store’s small but appealing books & play area for kids.
Right at the entrance to the store, you’ll find well-marked sections for New Arrivals and Bargain Books ($1 to $3). Then, depending on your interests or needs, you’ll find areas for Architecture, Literary Classics, Philosophy, Science, History, and on and on.
As the owner – Brian Frailey – noted to me, DogStar aims to be a reader’s store as well as a rarity store, and is founded on the principles of bargains, variety, eclectic, and buying local.
Hope to see you “in the stacks” soon!

This was always a fun outing when I lived in the city near this store.
