Pretty soon it’ll be two years that I’ve been working in downtown Allentown at the corner of 9th and Hamilton Streets. And due to the fact that I can’t seem to wake up early enough to make myself lunch before work, I’ve been to most of the downtown restaurants between 8th and 11th Streets, all of which I’ve been pretty happy with.

While I still have a handful of places to try, my “regular” Allentown lunch spots would have to be Delicioso Pizza, Allentown Brew Works (especially during the summertime when their outdoor patio, Der Biergarten, is open) and Nana’s Cafe.

Run by Nana and her daughter, Nana’s Cafe has quickly become a favorite place of mine to lunch. She literally makes the BEST turkey club sandwiches, stuffed with plenty of meat, shredded lettuce, crunchy bacon (no tomato for me) and served with a yummy dill pickle on the side. Totally worth the $4.99 she charges for it.

I recently tried out one of her quesadillas. I’m a fan of chicken and cheese quesadillas with sour cream and salsa on the side, but Nana’s chicken quesadilla also has bacon in it (and tomato, but remember, no tomato for me). I have to say, something about adding bacon to the whole deal made it so much better, something I didn’t think was possible for a near perfect food item.

Since it’s become cold, folks from the office have discovered Nana’s hot and steamy homemade soups, which they tell me are really good. Other items that I haven’t sampled – due to my love affair with her turkey clubs – but that my coworkers have enjoyed, include her sweet potato fries, the big fat greek salad, the gyro salad and the hummus pita.

So you get the idea: Nana’s Cafe offers an affordable assortment of salads, wraps, sandwiches, appetizers … and desserts, which I stare at every time I go but can’t bring myself to get (although her cheese cake looks delicious!).
