The McEwensville Flea Market: If You Can’t Find It, It’s Probably Not Worth Having

By: Lisa Z. Leighton July 2nd, 2009

Vintage Cake StandI am addicted to flea markets. There, I said it. I don’t care what day of the week it is, or what the weather’s like outside, I can easily and happily wander around aimlessly for hours at a flea market. I’ve been to flea markets in lots of major cities like New York City, Tampa, Philly and Washington DC. But nothing, I mean, nothing, compares to a small-town flea market – like the one in McEwensville. The finds (and prices) are unbelievable and the people-watching is second-to-none.

To be perfectly honest, I’m already kicking myself for telling you about this little flea market, because once the word gets out, there will be fewer treasures for me to find. But…you’re worth it!

It’s not hard to find, but it doesn’t “stand out” either. It’s located just off of Interstates 80 and 180 between Watsontown and McEwensville in Northern Northumberland County, near the old Hoeganaes plant. It takes place every Sunday, rain or shine, 80 degrees or 20 degrees. And it starts early. Very early. In fact, the vendors get there before the light of day to set up – and no, I’m not exaggerating. If you’re the kind of person who needs to sleep in until 11 am on Sunday, then just forget it. But, if you’re willing to be there by 8 or 9 am, you’re golden.

Typically, my husband and I go there in the spring and summer months to sell our wares (like everyone else, we have too much stuff and too little room), but this past Sunday we had out-of-town friends from Philly visiting, so we went treasure hunting instead. And of course, we all came home with something – I got my fix for antique cake stands, my husband bought some collectable military ID tags, and our friends bought vintage board games. And none of us spent more than $20. You just can’t beat it! Which is why I can say confidently: if you can’t find it at the McEwensville Flea Market, it’s probably not worth having.

One more thing — regarding food. The Flea Market has food for sale inside, but it’s nothing to write home about, so I’d suggest taking your coffee and a snack with you. Around lunch time, go to nearby Watsontown. There are 2 great lunch places in the downtown area: The Watson Inn and Ciro’s Ristorante Italiano. You won’t be disappointed.

Just went & it was awesome! On a good weather day expect 40-50+ stands ontop of the indoor section. Well worth getting up early for!
