Slow Walks Across Fast Bridges
I lead a privileged life. Maybe not privileged on typical terms, but on my terms. Almost every day I get to walk across the Smithfield Street Bridge. And while that may not seem like a privilege, it is my friends. It is.
The Smithfield Street Bridge leads from downtown to Station Square. Or from Station Square to downtown. It depends on your perspective I guess. I think a lot of things depend on your perspective. Point of view can do a lot for a situation. Make it better. Make it worse. Make it something… And my point of view is often having the city of Pittsburgh as my backdrop as I slowly walk over the bridge taking in the sights and sound of a city I love.
The Smithfield Street Bridge is only one among Pittsburgh’s 446 bridges, but it by far has become my favorite. It’s not the typical yellow bridge the city is known for. It also may not be the grandest bridge engineering has ever seen, but it has a charm to it that you feel as soon as you step onto it.
I know this isn’t a typical post because a bridge isn’t an event or a restuarant, but walking the bridge is as good as any dinner could get. Everytime I get about half way across, my pace slows as the stress of the day melts away and I actually begin to enjoy the walk. Making that walk across is a small joy and makes me feel more like a Pittsburgher with each step.
