Casual Barbecue in Newry
People who really love ribs and barbecue usually have definite opinions of what they do and do not like. I’m not here to change any die hard rib fan’s mind about which style of barbecue is the best. However, if you happen to be near Newry, Pennsylvania and you are hungry, you should definitely give Mel’s Ribs a try.
This is one of those places that my husband and I will go to several times in one week if we don’t have groceries in the house. While this doesn’t do too much for our waistlines, our taste buds and stomachs stay very happy.
Mel’s does not look like much from the outside: the building has been added onto which gives it a slightly ramshackle appearance and the parking lot is gravel, but the food is awesome and the service is good. Any place with sarcasm and humor on the menu is a winner in my book! I am particularly a fan of the pulled pork sandwiches. (Mainly because I have a personal preference not to pick my food off of a bone – I know many people who love their ribs as well.) I also love their waffle fries and their potato salad. They have a ton of sides from which to choose.
Mel’s is open for lunch and dinner all week long and you can choose whether to get take out or dine in. Dinner for two is usually around $20. Mel’s is close to both I-99 and Route 22. If you are just traveling through the area it is worth a detour off the highway.

And if you happen to be in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, you should DEFINITELY give Grumpys Bar-B-Que Roadhouse a try. (http://www.grumpysbbq.net/) They do their cooking in a hickory wood bar-b-que pit out back. Yummmmmm!
