Potato Chips and Smiles: A great morning at the Herr’s Snack Factory Tour

img_61891Who wouldn’t love to try  fresh-cooked, warm potato chips that are picked right off the factory line?  Well, you can at the FREE Herr’s Snack Factory Tour in Nottingham, PA.  My daughters and I took the trip out to the Herr’s Foods factory last week with some friends and we could not have have had a better morning.

You’ll start your tour in Chipper’s Theatre to get a really informative and interesting lesson on the history of the Herr family and their snack foods business.  Then, you’ll move on to a guided tour of the actual factory and get to view the snack manufacturing process “live”!

My daughter and her girlfriend were mesmerized by how some of their favorite foods are made from start to finish!  We saw everything from pretzel dough moving down conveyor belts to be pressed into their pretzel “twist” shape to bagged snack products moving down the shipping line and being packed in boxes to be delivered to retail outlets.

The highlight of the tour for all of us, though, is when our tour guide took us to the potato chip section of the factory.  It was so much fun to watch such large quantities of my personal favorite snack food moving along the bagging line.  Then, our fantastic tour guide went onto the factory floor with a tray and caught fresh, hot potato chips right of the line for us to eat.  You haven’t lived until you’ve tried a warm, fresh potato chip.  MMMMmmmmmm.

Our tour ended with a sample bag of Herr’s Kettle Cooked Potato Chips and a stop in their gift shop to browse some of their over 340 products and unique novelties.  They even have a snack bar that serves a full array of snacks and lunch items and offers both indoor and outdoor seating so that you can make a day out of your free tour.

The Herr’s Snack Factory also hosts some fun community everts too.  We want to go back on Monday, June 15th for Zoo Day.  They’ll have live animals on hand and be setting up a petting zoo along with providing some educational programs for the kids.  Sounds like a great time.

You should definitely put the free Herr’s Snack Factory tour on your summer to-do list and go try some hot-off-the-press chips for yourself!

Thanks, Shannon for reminding me of a fun field trip with my class several years ago. My students reacted much the same as you and your daughters did to the assembly line and freshly prepared chips. Another advantage to the Nottingham location is that it is also accessable from the Baltimore and Annapolis area as well as the Philly surroundings. I second your positive experience.
