Do You Know the Mushroom House?
When you’re writing a book about Pittsburgh, the people who live there are your best resources for stories. My family, having lived in the area for many years, has some great ones that they often share with me. Most recently my mother told me how she remembered a house near Frick Park that was shaped like a mushroom. Apparently, my great grandfather was responsible for building that unique structure, and try as I might, I have been unable to find any house that resembles an earthy fungus near the park. However, I did discover another great city treasure and place to go running on a sunny spring day.
Frick Park was fabulous! I know I’ll be back and will tell all my friends it is the perfect place to bring your dog also with off-leash areas, water fountains, and plenty of room to play. The trails are the park’s biggest attraction, and they provide some challenging terrain for mountain bikers of all levels. As for jogging, well, the trails in Frick are pretty short, so save this for a day when you’re only looking to chalk up 2-4 miles, and watch out if it’s muddy. The Riverview Trail is fun, but only if you’re not afraid of a little dirt. Finally, please do me a favor. If you know the “mushroom house,” leave me a comment!

I know the mushroom house. It is around the corner from my house. You were very close, going to Frick Park. It is actually very very close to the playground part of Frick Park which is known locally as the blue slide park.
The mushroom house is on Beechwood Blvd. near the intersection of Forward Ave. It is about midway between Forward and the entrance to the blue slide park. If you are driving you might miss it as a white stucco wall
surrounds it. I believe it was built by architect Frederick Scheibler (spelling
might be wrong). I hope you return so you can see it.
